Each guide follows a single look from raw pattern to finished piece, with clear skill and time benchmarks so you can plan the work before cutting.
Beginner
Foundation builds
Start with simple garment shells and basic seams, with an estimated two to three weekends of focused work for a first full look.
Intermediate
Structured silhouettes
Add interfacing, boning, and layered panels to hold a sculpted shape, planning roughly a week of fitting and assembly time.
Advanced
Armoured construction
Work with cold-formed metal plates, leatherwork, and hardware mounting for dense, layered pieces that take several weeks to complete.
Making sequence
From paper pattern to finished look
01
Draft the paper slopers
Draft base slopers from measurements, then adjust the silhouette lines on paper before any fabric is cut.
02
Cut and mark the muslin
Test the pattern in inexpensive muslin, marking seams, grainlines, and placement notches for the final cut.
03
Assemble the structure
Sew the garment shell, insert interfacing and boning, and press each seam as the form takes shape.
04
Shape the armour pieces
Cold-form the metal plates over a mould, trim their edges, and prepare the leather straps and fastenings.
Materials and techniques
Specify every material, then build it correctly
Heavy wools and canvas give structure to the base garment, while thermoset foams offer light, carveable forms. Metal plates are cold-formed and finished with a patina, and leather pieces are edge-skived and stitched.
Reinforce high-stress seams with a second row of stitching or a fused tape. Weather plates with layered patina washes, sealing the surface once the colour settles, so the finish stays consistent across each piece.
